NAWL's Campaign to Stop Parental Alienation Accusations

Advocating for a Ban of Parental Alienation Accusations
In 2023-2024, the National Association of Women and the Law led an ambitious nationwide campaign urging the federal government to ban parental alienation accusations in family court. For the first time in our history, we united a coalition of over 250 organizations across Canada.
Together with our partners, we organized a press conference, wrote to the Government through the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada Arif Virani, and launched a public campaign.
This campaign continues into 2024-2025 with the support of our partners, and we are confident that we can make a difference in the coming months.
What is Parental Alienation?
What actions have we implemented so far?
In 2024, NAWL organized two press conferences, participated in a panel on the UN Special Report on Parental Alienation and its Consequences in Canada, and launched a letter-writing campaign to enable individuals to write to their MPs.
In addition, we liaised with the federal government to advocate for legislative changes. On December 18, 2024, our team had a constructive meeting with Justice Minister Arif Virani to present our proposal and discuss possible solutions.
While progress on federal legislation has been delayed due to prorogation of Parliament until March 2025, we continue pushing forward, including at the provincial level.
In the last few weeks, our team gave a presentation on this topic to professionals in the York region, and submitted a brief to the Ontario Standing Committee on Justice Policy as well as to a researcher conducting a systemic review of the legal system’s treatment of victims of sexual and intimate partner violence in British Columbia. We also travelled to Calgary, Alberta and Whitehorse, Yukon, to hold consultations with family lawyers in these regions on the needs of survivors and avenues for reform.
