The federal government has announced it will legislate to require charities providing reproductive health services to clearly reveal to their clients whether they offer abortion or abortion referrals. This new policy will prevent anti-choice pregnancy crisis centres from misleading women to try to deter them from having an abortion.
“Everyone deserves access to unbiased, comprehensive healthcare as part of their fundamental human rights. But anti-choice clinics are misleading women by providing confusing and stigmatizing information in an attempt to deter abortions. The National Association of Women and the Law fully supports the government introducing legislation requiring charities in Canada to be transparent about the services they offer, to prevent anti-choice centres from presenting themselves as neutral pregnancy support services. This policy will help ensure that women and pregnant people are supported in accessing the healthcare they need. A true charity doesn’t make it its mission to deceive people about their reproductive options.” – Tiffany Butler, Executive Director of NAWL
