The National Association of Women and the Law (NAWL) applauds the inclusion of a Minister for Women and Gender Equality (WAGE) in Cabinet, and congratulates Minister Rechie Valdez on her appointment to this essential position.
Since March 2025, over 400 feminist organizations and professionals across Canada have advocated for the reinstatement of a dedicated WAGE Minister, following the elimination of this important role in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s first Cabinet.
NAWL is thrilled to see this position reinstated as a result of this collective advocacy. A dedicated Minister for Women and Gender Equality is vital to ensure substantive gender equality remains a central pillar of federal policy. This position plays an essential role in addressing the systemic barriers faced by women, 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, and other marginalized groups. A dedicated WAGE minister provides the leadership and accountability needed to drive intersectional, inclusive policy, while also safeguarding critical initiatives such as the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence.
In alignment with Canada’s international commitments, this decision sends a powerful signal that gender equality is not optional — it is foundational to good governance. We celebrate this move as a critical and necessary affirmation that gender justice belongs at the heart of national leadership, and we look forward to working alongside Minister Valdez to advance substantive equality for all women in Canada.
