WHO WE ARE:

  • The National Association of Women and the Law (NAWL) is an incorporated not-for-profit feminist organization that works to achieve substantive equality and the realization of human rights for all women in Canada through legal education, research, strategic intervention, coalition work and feminist law reform advocacy, particularly at the federal level.
  • NAWL is entering an exciting period, organizationally, with strong funding, an energized staff team, an engaged National Steering Committee (NSC) – and clear strategic direction as it marks its 50th This is the perfect time to be joining the organization; help us make real, feminist change in the law for Canadians!
  • Our organization and our work are framed by intersectional feminism and human rights, informed by our values: anti-oppression, reconciliation, gender-inclusion, allyship and accountable collaboration. We are committed to advancing decolonization in all aspects of our work and work to amplify the voices of communities that have been silenced or disadvantaged.
  • NAWL’s priority areas, as determined by the new strategic plan include:
    • Advancing Women’s Economic Security and Prosperity
    • Fighting for Reproductive Justice
    • Ending Violence Against Women
    • Defending Women’s Rights in the Climate Crisis

NATIONAL STEERING COMMITTEE:

  • NAWL is governed by a National Steering Committee that functions as our Board of Directors. NAWL’s NSC has 12 members.
  • We are recruiting 2 NSC members to sit on our National Steering Committee. Committee members play a vital role in supporting and guiding our work and our growth.
  • To ensure that our governance structure reflect the diversity of our country, as well as our values, we are encouraging Black, Indigenous, racialized and disabled women and gender-diverse leaders to apply.
  • 2-year term

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Approximate time commitment of 5-7 hours per month, including quarterly NSC meetings (1hr x 2), September AGM, annual fall in-person meeting (Friday-Sunday) and involvement in at least 1 committee or working group.
  • Attendance at NAWL’s annual in-person meeting – (next year the dates are November 14-15-16, 2025) – in the national capital region (expenses reimbursed)
  • Active participation, such as Chairing or membership, in at least one committee or working group (included in the time commitment listed above). Our committees and working groups with current vacancies are:
    • Feminist Law Reform (FLR) and the climate crisis working group
    • Feminist Law Reform (FLR) and reproductive justice working group
    • Human Resources / Governance Committee
    • Fundraising Committee

EXPERIENCE:

  • Familiarity or interest in intersectional feminism, law reform and feminist issues
  • Previous experience on a board of directors / National Steering Committee, or previous experience working closely with a Committee / Board of Directors
  • Experience or interest in law, litigation or activism an asset
  • Experience with governance, policies, and organization development/leadership
  • Demonstrable expertise in at least one of NAWL’s priority areas considered an asset
  • Finance and/or fundraising experience considered an asset
  • A network of contacts within the private / public and/or non-profit sectors
  • Bilingualism considered an asset
  • Self-reflective, passion for our mission and aligned with NAWL values

Research tells us that male-identified candidates apply to jobs when they meet less than 60% of the criteria, women and members of other historically marginalized groups, however, tend to only apply when they have 100% of the qualifications.
