 Research Internship – Summer Student 

The National Association of Women and the Law (NAWL) is an incorporated not-for-profit feminist organization that promotes the equality rights of women in Canada through legal education, research, and law reform advocacy.   

NAWL is seeking applications for the following position: 

Research Internship – Summer Law Student (Bilingual) 

CONTRACT DURATION: 

Eight (8) weeks, starting as early as July 4, 2022. 

TERMS: 

35 hours/week, at a rate of $20/hour 

QUALIFICATIONS & ELIGIBILITY: 

  • Preferred level of Education of the Participant: Post-secondary, current law student and/or recent law school graduate. 

Eligible candidates must: 

  • be under 30 years of age at the start of the employment; 
  • be bilingual (English/French); 
  • have strong research and writing skills in both French and English; 
  • support NAWL’s mission working to achieve substantive equality and the realization of human rights for all women in Canada through legal action, research, strategic intervention, coalition work and feminist law reform advocacy, particularly at the federal level; 
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and, 
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations. 

LOCATION: 

NAWL’s office at 1404 Scott Street in Ottawa (remote or hybrid work arrangement may considered) 

SCOPE OF WORK: 

The Research Intern will be expected to attend to the following tasks, including but not limited to: 

  • research to support the development, dissemination and/or evaluation of tools, including online tools to support feminist law reform advocacy in Canada, 
  • research and communications to support the development and/or dissemination of briefs, discussion papers, fact sheets, and presentations, 
  • research to support the development of NAWL’s website content on equality rights issues, 
  • research and preparation of communications to respond to questions on feminist law reform advocacy, 
  • research to identify potential funding sources, including updating donor databases and fostering donor relations through donor management software and communications, 
  • development of communications materials using both traditional and social media, on feminist law reform advocacy and issues, 
  • preparation of materials for meetings with feminist and equality seeking groups, academics and activists on women’s rights issues, 
  • preparation of meeting reports and/or minutes and related communications, 
  • identification of gaps in feminist research on key law reform issues, especially in our key priority areas of reproductive rights, violence against women, and the climate crisis, and 
  • support the development of communications to build public support for feminist law reform, activities and advocacy, and 
  • other duties as required.
